Why I'm on Pinterest


"You're a copywriter, why are you on Pinterest?"

It's a question I have been asked a few times now, so I thought I should take a few moments to answer it.

Firstly, for those of you who have been hiding under a rock, Pinterest is a social networking site devoted to sharing images. Users create virtual pinboards of images, which they source from all over the web. The boards then build up a following of other users who are interested in the subject matter or style of the images pinned.

Pinterest is an excellent site for designers, foodies and crafty people, who can source whole mood boards of inspiration. They can even showcase some of their own creations, though the site doesn't actively encourage self-promotion.


So what does Pinterest have to offer a copywriter like me?


Inspiration
Some of my work involves generating creative ideas, many of which need visuals as well as copy. Seeing a pinboard of images — even images that have nothing to do with what I'm writing about — can often inspire me and spark those creative thoughts.

Networking opportunities
Okay, so it's not the most 'social' of the social networking sites, but it still offers opportunities to connect with others and share ideas.

A chance to show some personality 
For me this is the most important thing Pinterest has to offer — not just for copywriters, but for any creative professionals.

While the Internet has opened up a whole new world of business opportunities, at times it can also feel impersonal.

When hiring a creative person it's important to find someone you connect with. Someone who understands where you are coming from and who can share your vision. Finding a copywriter that you have an affinity with often makes the job easier to manage and gives you a better result.

I like Pinterest because it gives me a chance to show that I'm a real person. I can show examples of creativity that inspire me and copywriting work I admire. I can also impart a piece of me in terms of my interests, aspirations, tastes and personality. To a client, that extra insight can be priceless.
